Can Vitamin D Reduce The Risk Of Breast Cancer?

In a study published in the June 2011 edition of the American Journal or Epidemiology researchers reported a link between vitamin D levels and the prevention of breast cancer.

This study was led by Laura Anderson of the Prevention and Cancer Control, Cancer Care Ontario and was a population based case control study. What it showed was that the women who spent more time in outdoor activities during both adolescence and adulthood were less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Other epidemiological studies have shown that vitamin D intake and exposure to sunlight is associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer. This would suggest that vitamin D deficiency could possibly play some role in the pathology of breast cancer.

When they looked at women who spent 21 hours per week outdoors during adolescence to those who spent 6 hours per week they found a 29% reduction in the risk of breast cancer. They also found similar reductions in risk in women who spent more time outdoors over the course of their lives.

Exposure to UV light and sun protection were not correlated with the risk of breast cancer. Reduced risk of breast cancer was associated with a combined score of vitamin D however.

The research team concluded that "This study suggests that factors suggestive of increased cutaneous production of vitamin D are associated with reduced breast cancer risk."
